Biography:
I was 16 years old when I obtained my ham radio licence. My First Station's call was VE7BGE.
After high school I attended Room 19 in the City of Vancouver, BC and obtained my 2nd Class
Commercial Radio Licence. Upon graduating I obtained work as a commercial radio operator at a Loran Station
then as a radio operator and weather observer at Spring Island, BC off the west coast of Vancouver Island .
I was later transferred to Smithers BC, then served for one year at the worlds most northerly
city, Alert NWT. After returning from the arctic, I transfered to Terrace BC and finally
to a Canadian weather ship named, The Stonetown, stationed off the West Coast of British Columbia.

In 1967 I decided to return to school and enrolled in general sciences at the the University of
British Columbia,(UBC) located in Vancouver CANADA . While at UBC I was an active member of the university ham club called
HAMSOC: FD 1967/Reunion-1986/1992/1995.
During my second year at university I met my future wife, Gaye. We were married in 1969. In 1973 we moved to
Cranbrook BC and had a Heathkit Station.
While living in Cranbrook BC, I obtained my flying licence. I often worked 2 meter aeronautical mobile
while flying from Cranbrook to Western Canadian locations. At an altitude of 12,000 feet you can
work a long ways on 2 meters. Photos: My brother and I by an old Cessna 172 visiting our cousins on their farm

In 1980 we moved to North Vancouver, BC where we have lived ever since. In 1979 I was issued a two letter call, VE7CA.
We have one daughter and two sons. Our daughter and youngest son are married and we are blessed with six grandchildren, 2 girls and 4 boys.

I have been working in the commercial real estate industry for the last 30 years and
have no plans to retire. Following is a picture of my operating station with my homebrew HBR2000!
The HBR2000 is a home built, 160 to 6 meter CW/SSB & Digital Hi-Performance QRP
transceiver. Under the operating desk is a homemade 160-6 meter, 100 watt amplifier and power supply. You
can find more information regarding my homebrew amateur radio projects in the menu above. Above
the HBR2000 is a 40 Meter direct conversion transceiver (W7EL design) and the DCP-10 6 meter
direct conversion CW/DSB transceiver which you will also find described in the Homebrew Page
above.
I continue to be active operating mostly CW, chasing DX, looking for new grids on 6 meters and
entering contests under the QRP category. I have a strong interest in antennas and have
published 4 articles on antenna designs that I have developed. See the above menu for further
details regarding my homebrew amateur radio and antenna projects.

160 meter full wave quad loop with half of the loop in vertical plane and the other half in the
horizontal plane.
