Biography:

I was 16 years old when I obtained my ham radio licence. My First Station's call was VE7BGE. After high school I attended Room 19 in the City of Vancouver, BC and obtained my 2nd Class Commercial Radio Licence. Upon graduating I obtained work as a commercial radio operator at a Loran Station then as a radio operator and weather observer at Spring Island, BC off the west coast of Vancouver Island. I was later transferred to Smithers BC, then served as a commercial radio operator for one year at the worlds most northerly city, Alert NWT.

Yours truely at the operating position at Alert, NWT taken while on shift in 1964. Note the 51j-4's and Hammarlund SP-210LX. Until 1999 Alert was located in the North West Territories with the prefix VE8. When the boarders between Canada's northern territories were re-aligned a new territory was formed called Nunanut. Alert is located in Nunanut which is situated on the north tip of Ellesmere Island. Nunamut has it's own distinct prefix, VY0. There was a fully equiped Collins S line with the big Collins linear at Alert, VE8ML and I was very active chasing DX.

After returning from the arctic, I was transfered to Terrace BC and finally to a Canadian weather ship named "The Stonetown", stationed off the West Coast of British Columbia. Here are a few QSL's that I sent out when operating from the above mentioned locations: First/Maritime-Mobile/Alert-NWT/Today.

After a particularly bad storm while at sea on the Stonetown I decided to return to school and enrolled in general sciences at the the University of British Columbia,(UBC) located in Vancouver CANADA. While at UBC I was an active member of the university ham club called HAMSOC: FD 1967/Reunion-1986/1992/1995. During my second year at university I met my future wife, Gaye. We were married in 1969. In 1973 we moved to Cranbrook BC and I was active with a Heathkit Station chasing DX and building solid state QRP rigs. Heathkit Station.

While living in Cranbrook BC I obtained my flying licence. I often worked 2 meter aeronautical mobile while flying from Cranbrook to Western Canadian locations. At an altitude of 12,000 feet you can work a long ways on 2 meters. Photos: My brother and I by an old Cessna 172 visiting our cousins on their farm in Saskatchewan/My father-in-law, VE7BEH now SK, and I preparing for a flight over the Rockies in our 1977 Cessna 172. While living in Cranbrook I was happy to receive my two letter call sign, VE7CA.

Because of the big financial crash beginning in early 1980 we decided to accept an offer to work in the Greater Vancouver area. After much searching we decided to move to North Vancouver, BC where we purchased our present home. There are many very tall trees in North Vancouver so I knew I could put up a G5RV antenna so I continue looking for those elusive DX stations. that never seem to on the air. We have one daughter and two sons and now blessed with six grandchildren, 2 girls and 4 boys. Recent pictures of me, Markus Hansen, VE7CA and our six grand children. In my career I worked for over 35 years in the commercial real estate industry and also in real estate land and building development. Since I retired in 2011 I now have a little more time for ham radio.

Following is a picture of my present operating station with my homebrew HBR-2000! The HBR-2000 is a home built, 160 to 6 meter CW/SSB & Digital Hi-Performance QRP transceiver. Under the operating desk is a homemade 160-6 meter, 100 watt amplifier and power supply. You can find more information regarding my homebrew amateur radio projects in the menu above. On the shelf above the HBR-2000 is a 40 Meter direct conversion transceiver (W7EL design) and the DCP-10 6 meter direct conversion CW/DSB transceiver which you will also find described in the Homebrew Page in the Menu at the top of this page.

I continue to be active operating mostly CW, chasing DX, looking for new grids on 6 meters and entering contests. I have a strong interest in antennas and have published 4 articles on antenna designs that I have developed. I have also had anticles publised in QST and QEX. See the above menu for further details regarding my homebrew amateur radio and antenna projects.
